The Life of Francis J. Gallagher

Francis J. Gallagher passed away on Sunday October 15, 2017 at his home in Narberth, PA.  He was 96.  Son of the late Patrick and Margaret Gavigan Gallagher, he was born in Philadelphia in 1921.  He was a man devoted to his family, his friends, his faith, his community, and his country.
Francis served his country in World War II as a Sergeant.  He was stationed in France and Alaska from 1942-1945.  After the war, Francis and his twin brother Patrick (deceased 2007) married sisters Anne and Margaret (deceased 2008), respectively.  They had a double wedding in 1946.  They ran the family business of Gallagher Taxi and Limousine service until their retirement.  They were volunteers, parents, and shared the same home for over 60 years.
In service to his community, Francis served as a volunteer firefighter for 67 years for Union Fire Association of Bala Cynwyd.  He was responsible for driving the Ladder Truck.  He responded to over 7,800 fire calls and with his brethren saved numerous lives and countless properties.  He was a member of St. Margaret’s Parish and offered his services whenever possible.  Especially known for his service in the annual Gallagher Fair and later the Gallagher Beef and Beer.  These events raised funds for his goddaughter and niece, Sister Ann and her community, The Missionary Servant of the Most Blessed Trinity.
Francis and Anne were married for 71 years and had a lifetime of mutual respect, absolute love, and daily laughter.  They also enjoyed a family of eight children – Terry (Mike Curran), Frank (Karyn), Joe (Chris), Mary (Tom Tract), Dean (David McNichol), Bern (Charlie Sherman), Paul, and Doll (Paul McElhaney).  They fondly watched those children grow and raise 25 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Until his last day, he still called her “My Bride” and she still called him “Francis”.
Francis touched many lives and enjoyed, what many have called, a “full life”.  We, his family and his friends, will miss him greatly.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing on Friday October 20, 2017 from 5 to 8 PM  at McConaghy Funeral Home, 328 W. Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore, PA.  A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday October 21, 2017 11 AM at St. Margaret Church, 210 N. Narberth Avenue, Narberth, PA.  Interment will follow at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Missionary Servants of the Most Blessed Trinity at 3501 Solly Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19136.
