The Life of Marjorie Bay
Marjorie Bay graduated from life on earth, September 14, 2017, to be with her father and mother, Charles and Esther Seaman, along with many of her teaching friends who reside in a special place in heaven. Marjorie was born September 2, 1937 in Philadelphia, PA.
She was proud to be from Philadelphia and even more proud to have graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. Throughout her life she was very active in church and began singing in the adult choir starting at age 14. She continued singing in the church choir at First Baptist Church once they moved to Columbia, MO. Marjorie always did well in school, including grade school, high school and college. Any grade less than an A was not acceptable. Marjorie’s favorite vacation spot was at the beach in Cape May, NJ where she enjoyed many summers with her family.
As a young lady, Marjorie was asked to be a host at the USO in Cape May, NJ where the Coast Guard sailors spent time when on liberty. While at the USO she met her husband, Park Bay, a boy from Missouri. Marjorie and Park dated while she finished her college degree, and Park completed his tour of duty in the Coast Guard. In 1959, Marjorie and Park were married, then moved to Columbia, MO. There, Park attended college at the University of Missouri. Marjorie worked as a lab technician at the University of Missouri hospital. While working, Marjorie attended classes at MU to obtain her teaching degree. With her degree in hand and excellent grades, she was employed by the Columbia Public School District to teach science at Jefferson Jr. High School.
Marjorie’s ability to teach was recognized by many. She was recruited by Dr. Wayne Walker to move to Rock Bridge Senior High School to teach chemistry, advanced biology and human anatomy & physiology. Mrs. Bay would never give up on her students. Her goal was to give a test and return the graded exams to her students the next day. Many nights Park would go to bed while Marjorie graded papers. He would find her still grading the next morning. She believed that immediate feedback was essential to the learning process. Her inspiring teaching style was recognized in 1995, by the Columbia Community Teachers Association as the outstanding secondary educator.
In addition to Marjorie’s many teaching responsibilities, she was active in the community she loved. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbia for 56 years, PEO chapter JJ, a founding member of Delta Kappa Gamma: Beta Beta Chapter, Eastern Star, Mother Singers, Bridge clubs, church circle, Sunday school teacher, Science Olympiad Sponsor, Yearbook Sponsor, among many other accomplishments.
Marjorie was a wonderful teacher, wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband Park Bay of Columbia, MO as well as a sister Beverly Maurer of Wilmington, NC and her sons Paul and Glenn Maurer, as well as her children, grandchildren and nephews. She was always eager to share her pride in her family: Charles & Christine Bay of Columbia, MO, Janet & Nick Kieffer of Columbia, MO, and Jeremy & Catherine Bloomer of Olathe, KS. She was also in love with her grandchildren Lexie, Cole and LaTavious Kieffer; Andrew, Grant and Carter Bloomer. Her legacy of her teachings and family will last forever.
Interment will be held Tuesday, September 26, 2017 Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania where she will be laid to rest next to her parents.
