The Life of ALICE GERTRUDE WALKER

Alice Walker was born in Montezuma, IA on June 2, 1918, to James and Gertrude Grier. She passed away June 27, 2017, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston at the age of 99.

Alice worked in clothing retail most of her life and was also the manager of Reed’s Ice Cream in the 1950’s. She was a skilled artist, especially when it came to crocheting and painting.

Alice had a strong faith throughout her life. She was full of wisdom and common sense, and was feisty at times. She was a true matriarch of her family and was the glue that held everyone together.

Alice is survived by her children, Barbara (John) Wilkinson, Marilyn Tieszen, and Bobby Walker; grandchildren, Kim Tieszen, Paul (Cathy) Tieszen, Tim (Jen) Reed, Amy (Steve) Mullen, and Jeff (Tana) Reed; 7 great-grandchildren, 3 step great-grandchildren, 2 great great-grandchildren, and 5 step great great-grandchildren; her sister, Mildred Creekmur; as well as other loving relatives and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Gertrude (Morris) Grier; her loving husband, Robert “Bob” Walker; and 6 siblings.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 30, 2017, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines with a graveside service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
