The Life of DARLENE ROSE BATTIN

Darlene Battin, 82, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, IA. She was born October 13, 1934, in Des Moines to William and Mary Bishop.

Darlene was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She always put others’ needs before her own and will be remembered as the best cook in the world.

Darlene was a member of Marquisville United Methodist Church in Des Moines. She had a love for the outdoors from fishing in Orr, MN and Lost Island, IA, to gardening and tending her flowers. She was an avid bowler, and enjoyed playing cards and games with her family. Darlene also enjoyed visiting casinos and traveling to Laughlin, NV.

Darlene is survived by her husband, George Battin; daughter, Judy (Darwin) Sonnenburg; son, Joe (Tonya) Battin; grandchildren, Rhonda Kigar, Tina (Raymond) Mass, Tamara (Robert) Cox, Brandon (Meagan) Sonnenburg, Heather (Rick) Carolus, Jason (Samantha) Battin, and Nicole Battin; 17 great-grandchildren and 16 great great-grandchildren; as well as her siblings, William Bishop Jr., Linda Bishop, and Wilma Eastridge. She was preceded in death by her father, William Bishop; stepmother, Fern Bishop; mother, Mary Briggs; great-grandchildren, Ariana and Audrina Carolus; great great-grandchildren, Ace and Angel Sandoval; and sisters, Martha Hilliard and Jeri Honts.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., with services to follow at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Interment will follow services at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Darlene.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the Iowa Veterans Home, especially Dr. Cheuk, Jenny, Mysteri, and Renee, for the very kind, compassionate care they gave to Darlene.
