The Life of ROBERT EUGENE LACKEY

Robert Eugene Lackey of Altoona, Iowa, age 94, passed away March 6, 2017. He was the son of Roy Robert and Esta Fay (Peebles) Lackey.

Robert was born March 12, 1922, in rural Ford County, near Dodge City, Kansas. He will be cremated as he requested. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 10, 2017, at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Vernon Leroy, Leon Jud, and John Calvin.

In 1944, Robert was married to Pauline Bagwell. They had two sons, Robert Jr. (Colleen) and Thomas (Sylvia). They survive. Robert and Pauline were later divorced.

He married Mildred Schulz in 1970, she survives at home. Other survivors are: stepson, John Richard Schulz (Shirley) of West Des Moines, Iowa; stepdaughter, Vickie Schulz of Osage Beach, Missouri; and his sister, Yvonne Bullock (Harold) of Waterfall, Pennsylvania. Robert and Mildred also have seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Robert grew up and attended schools in Kansas. He worked for Boeing Aircraft Company until the start of World War II when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He served as an aircraft mechanic, B-29 Flight Engineer and Fighter Pilot, attaining rank of Captain. Later he worked 35 years for Williams Pipeline Company and retired as Terminal Superintendent in 1984.

After retirement, Robert and Mildred vacationed in Europe. They lived at Lake of the Ozarks for a number of years and later returned to Des Moines. They then spent winters at the Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Robert had been a member of the American Legion, Elks and Masons, was a Commercial Pilot, and in later years enjoyed writing short stories.
