The Life of Alice F. Smith

Born on January 21, 1939 to the late Moses and Mamie Royal, and baby sister to Peggy.
Alice grew up in North Carolina and educated in the North Carolina Public School System. After
graduating high school, she met and fell in love with Nevonia (Barney) Smith. They eventually
married and settled in Philadelphia, PA.
She worked as a waitress at Lock’s Restaurant for many years. While doing so they began
their family. The first born was Buster. He was eventually followed by Daryl (who preceded her
in death), Rodney and Kevin.
Alice became a teacher’s aide at the Corpus Christi Montessorri Schools. In addition, she was
the block captain of Marston St. for many years. It was important that her children and those
around her had a safe, healthy and nurturing environment. Alice welcomed all and treated them
like family. If she knew that someone was in need she made sure that need was met.
Alice was a people’s person. To know her was to love her. She was a very kind, loving and
generous person.
She was never one to be complacent. She decided to take the civil service test. This led to
a career with the Internal Revenue Service where she started as a claims clerk. She then went
on to hold numerous positions such as Reclamation Clerk, Reclamation Supervisor, Deputy
Claims Branch Manager, Claims Branch Manager and President of the National Treasury
Employee’s Union. When she retired she was a Program Analyst for the Internal Revenue
Service.
She is survived by her loving husband Barney, her sons Buster and his spouse Charlie,
Rodney and his spouse Sheila, Kevin and his former spouse Tamika. She leaves behind six
granddaughters: Brittany, Kiera, RaShonda, Briana, Ashya , Brandy and one grandson Kash.
She also leaves two great granddaughters Iyana and Brooklyn, a loving sister Peggy Ward and
a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and wonderful friends.

Sorrowfully,

The family
