The Life of ELDON LEE BECKETT

Eldon Lee Beckett, 90, passed away January 31, 2017. He was born in Dubuque, Iowa on July 18, 1926, the son of Lee and Florence Beckett.

At the age of three, his family moved to Des Moines. He graduated from East High School in 1944 and was drafted into the United States Army where he trained at Camp Hood, Texas. Following training, he went to Boston and landed in Marseille, France, as an infantry replacement. From replacement depot at Worms, Germany, he joined Company L, 242 Infantry regt, 42nd Rainbow Division, serving at several locations in Austria, the last being Vienna. Eldon received his honorable discharge from the service in 1946.

In 1947, he went to work for Western Electric Co. and Remington Rand Co. In 1950, he started work with Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., and held various jobs, most recent being an Outside Plant Engineer. He took an early retirement in 1984, and remained an active member of the Telephone Pioneers. Eldon was also a member of 1944 East High class meetings, VFW Post 9662, and First Presbyterian Church from 1943 until his passing.

Eldon is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Beckett; daughters, Karen Moreno and Bonnie Weber; his granddaughters, Amber (Andrew) Goulette and Angela Moreno; as well as his great-grandson, Nelson Moreno-Salazar. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jacob Weber.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 6, 2017, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday afternoon from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
