The Life of VALDA MAXINE JONES

Valda Maxine Jones passed away November 6, 2016. Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2016, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Valda was born April 6, 1917, in Rockford, IA to Charles Henry and Emma Grace (Briggs) Smith. She grew up in Rockford, Waterloo, and Des Moines. In 1936 she married Harold Harlan Jones. After her retirement from Northwestern Bell, they relocated to Joplin, MO.

She volunteered for several years at St. John’s Hospital and was a voting poll judge. She enjoyed growing Tropicana roses and playing bridge. Her favorite pastime was family gatherings and playing games with her grandchildren.

Valda is survived by her children, Kenneth (Cynthia) of Des Moines, Carole (Pieter) Buwalda of Winterset; 4 granddaughters, Deb Wignall, Karen Kinahan, Beth Borden, and Julie Mallo; 12 great-grandchildren and 7 great great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Smith of Bella Vista, AR. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a sister, Thelma Morris.
