The Life of LOUIS FREDERICK GIESEKE

Louis F. Gieseke, 89, of Ankeny passed away September 22, 2016.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., September 26, at Memorial Services of Iowa funeral home (4208 N Ankeny Blvd). A visitation will be held 4 - 6:00 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 25, also at the funeral home.

Louis was born September 16, 1927 in Janesville, MN, and graduated from the University of Minnesota. He served with the US Navy during World War II, and soon after, married Florence Gostomczik. Lou retired as Water Commissioner of Iowa Natural Resources Council.

Lou was a member of the Saydel School Board, a Little League coach, and a Scout and 4-H leader. He was a man of many interests and skills. The son of Minnesota farmers, he enjoyed gardening and nature. He and Florence raised their family on 3 acres where they grew vegetables, fruit, chickens and geese to feed their family, and flowers for beauty.

He was well known at the public library, where he borrowed books on a wide variety of non-fiction topics. He enjoyed conversation, and shared what he learned from books and life. He also enjoyed his family and the trips he and Florence made to Germany, the Panama Canal, and Alaska.
He and friends formed an investment club. Lou was very savvy about the stock market and personal investments.

Lou left his family with mementos which reflect him and will help keep him close in their hearts: plants and trees, carvings of fish and waterfowl, and odd pieces and parts he saved. Most of all he left a legacy of strong work ethic, common sense, salt, and love of his family.

He is survived by his wife, Florence; six sons, Richard (Susan) of Houston, TX, Ron (Deb) of Urbana, OH, Randy of Wisconsin Dells, Jeff (Sylvia) of Bondurant, IA, Jim (Virginia) of Des Moines, IA, and Jerry (Suzi) of Minburn, IA; 22 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to Our Lady''s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church.
