The Life of Janice Hylwa Lyons


Janice Lyons, age 79, wife of 59 years to her high school sweetheart James Lyons and resident of Oxford, passed away June 20, 2016. She was born January 14, 1937 in Derby, daughter of the late Peter and Gladys Rosengren Hylwa. A graduate of Ansonia High School and the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing, she worked as a nurse for Dr. Lanzi of Orange. While her husband was in the U.S. Army, they spent 2 years in Louisiana, Kentucky and Texas, where she was a practicing nurse. They returned to CT in 1959 where Janice worked to support Jim through law school and moved to Oxford in 1970 with 3 young children. There, she was a member of The Oxford Junior Women’s Club, The Immanuel Lutheran Church in Oxford and served on the Oxford Library Board. Jim and Janice retired to The Meadow Brook Estates and greatly enjoyed the new friendships there. Janice always looked forward to her Canasta, Dominos and book groups. An avid Democrat, she followed national and state politics closely. In addition to her husband, she leaves to cherish her memory 2 sons Christopher Lyons & wife Wendy of Wallingford, Peter Lyons & wife Stephanie of Brewster, N.Y., daughter Cara Richo & husband Mark of Wallingford and 7 grandchildren, all of whom thought the world of their Nana. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at The Immanuel Lutheran Church in Oxford. Friends may call at church from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. She will be buried privately in Pine Grove Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to The Oxford Public Library c/o Town Hall, 486 Oxford Rd., Rt. 67 Oxford, CT 06478. The Jenkins King & Malerba Funeral Home, 12 Franklin St. Ansonia, is entrusted with arrangements.
