The Life of LAURA IRENE MCEWEN

Laura I. McEwen passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at Calvin Community in Des Moines, IA. A gathering of Family & Friends will be held on Friday, July 1st from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., in the atrium at Calvin Community, 4210 Hickman Rd, Des Moines.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 2nd at 10:00 a.m. at Highland Park Presbyterian Church, 321 Euclid, Des Moines.Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Laura was born April 24, 1918 in Dexter, IA, to Albert and Effie Holmes Decker. She graduated from Grimes High School in 1935. In September, 1936, she enrolled at Simpson College in Indianola, IA.It was there that she met Walter McEwen and they were married on February 15, 1939. Five daughters were born to this union. At the age of 70, Laura returned to Simpson College, completed her college career, and graduated with a BA in English.

Laura was a 70 year member of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Theta Upsilon and Delta Zeta sororities, the Auburn Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and the Woodward Parent Association. Laura was an active member of her daughter''s school''s P.T.A.s and at one time the President of the Des Moines P.T.A. Council. She was also very active with the Moingona Girl Scout Council and had troop leadership.

Her church was her extended family. She was a member of the Mariners Sunday School class, and was active in the Women''s Association. Her real enjoyment came with working in the church''s kitchen. She did not consider it work to feed a couple hundred people.

Laura is survived by four daughters, Phyllis (Robert) Kaldenberg, Winterset, IA, Alice McEwen, Waco, TX, Betty McEwen (Bill King), Spring Hill, KS and Joyce (Dennis) Dutton, Whitney, TX. She had 6 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert & Effie Decker, husband Walter, brothers Alton Decker, Lloyd Decker, B. Russell Decker, Myron Decker and Wayne Decker; a daughter, Nancy McEwen and an infant grandson, Billy Hunerdosse.

Blessed was her family that she was a part of their lives and she will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Calvin Community''s Good Samaritan Fund, Unity Point Hospice, or Highland Park Presbyterian Church.
