The Life of Catherine H Penny

God has called to heaven an angel, our wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, sister and friend in Cathy Penny, 57. Cathy was called by our Lord on April 19 at MD Anderson Hospital.

Cathy was born in Lafayette, Louisiana to William “Bill” Owens Sr. and Roylyn Schaeffler Owens (lifelong residents of Lafayette). Cathy survived by her husband Rusty Penny, her brothers Billy Owens and his wife Michelle Varvaro of North Carolina, Chris Owens and wife Tara Broussard of Lafayette, her nieces and nephews Billy Owens III, Bobby Owens, Mary Owens Rouly, Brieanna Owens, Brock Adams, Brent Owens, Blaze Owens, and Beau Owens.

Cathy, affectionately known as “Mimi”, leaves a wonderful legacy for her children and grandchildren: Marie Penny with daughter Alexis and Stephanie Penny with daughter Christie all of Lafayette and Michael Penny with his wife Genevieve residing in Los Angeles, California.

Cathy is greeted in Heaven by her grandparents Oscar Owens, Mary Ruth Burleigh, Roy Schaeffler and Aline Boucher, and her father-in-law Bob Penny all of Lafayette.

Cathy was devoted to our Blessed Mother Mary and our Lord’s Devine Mercy. Cathy was a selfless friend, generous with her time and always quick to pray for those in need. She had the spirit of a compassionate counselor and friend, dedicating most of her life and energy to helping the young people who would seek her advice about matters of life and difficult decisions that adolescents are faced with. While living in Jakarta, Indonesia in the early 90’s, Cathy spent her efforts on relieving the desperate situation of the Cambodian refugees, who were stranded on isolated islands. She helped to manage a non-profit sales outlet generating revenue for the crafts created by the refugees to provide for their subsistence. After repatriating to Allen Texas, while raising her three teenagers, Cathy’s house was known as the safe place for the young to come and seek non-judgmental council on any issues they faced. Most afternoons after school many high school teens would gather at her house and seek advice on matters from relationships to substance abuse. The magnitude of her contributions to these young people are only now being recognized by the huge outpouring of appreciation and condolences being expressed by those she touched over the 20 years of providing council to the young. Her most recent years were spent devoted to raising her beloved grand-daughters and positively influencing a third generation of youth.
