The Life of TIMOTHY ROGER HARTZER

Timothy R. Hartzer, 65, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2016.

Tim was born on October 25, 1950 to Charles and Gertrude (Newton) Hartzer and was a lifelong resident of Des Moines, Iowa. Tim graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1968 and the University of Iowa in 1972.

Tim married Rhonda Kopp in 1973 and they had two sons, Shawn and Marc. He was owner of Hartzer Sodding Co. for many years, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Bert Newton, and his father, Charles Hartzer.

Later in life, Tim overcame great odds when he courageously battled and survived non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He lived another ten years, allowing him to become a very proud Grandpa to his grandson Drake.

He enjoyed sports and was an avid fan of his beloved Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. Tim also liked to follow politics and collect complete sets of numerous television series. He was a great neighbor, always willing to help by mowing the grass or shoveling snow whenever he saw a need.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Gertrude Hartzer. He is survived by his two sons, Shawn Hartzer of Post Falls, Idaho, and Marc Hartzer and his wife, Michele of Bondurant, Iowa; grandson, Drake Hartzer; siblings, Michael of Arlington, TX; Ronald (Cheryl) of Lynn Haven, FL, and Linda (Rick) Mauk of Clive, IA; and several nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2016 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Pkwy in West Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, April 22nd at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue followed by interment at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
