Howard Lohr was born June 3, 1892 in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1914 he played 18 games in the outfield for the Cincinnati Reds. He had 10 hits in his 47 at-bats that year with a double, a triple, two stolen bases and seven runs batted in. Two years later, he was with the Cleveland Indians appearing in three games getting only one more career hit.

Primarily an outfielder, he was 6’ tall, 165 pounds and 22 years old when he made his major league debut on June 17, 1914 (the same year as Babe Ruth.) He played 18 games that year with the Cincinnati Reds. A right-hander he had 10 hits in his 47 at-bats with a double, triple, two stolen bases and seven RBIs. In 1916 he appeared in three games with the Cleveland Indians where he had only one more career hit.

Howard Lohr was also manager of the Jamestown, NY Giants in 1914 and the Wellsville, NY Rainmakers 1915 where he led both teams to first place in the Interstate League. The Interstate League was the name of five different American minor baseball leagues that played primarily throughout the mid-Atlantic region intermittently from 1896 through 1952.

Baseball began a revival after World War I and Howard Lohr played a role in semi-pro ball. The local Chester/Upland teams recruited Lohr and Dick Spalding, both outstanding outfielders, as their headline players. Dick Spalding, a Philadelphia native, was a muti-sport athlete who played for the American, National and International Leagues.
