The Life of JAMES ARTHUR BISHOP

James Bishop

August 25, 1930 - April 7, 2016

James “Jim” A. Bishop, 85, passed peacefully with family present on April 7, 2016. He was born August 25, 1930 to Ralph and Agnes (Madden) Bishop. Raised in Des Moines, he attended North High School and Drake University. Jim married Teresa (Durbala) in 1951. He served 2 tours in the US Navy and worked as a banker for most of his life.

Many who knew Jim had no idea of his charitable contributions because he rarely mentioned them. He was actively involved in numerous charities including the Sertoma Club, Special Olympics, All Saints Catholic church (he liked to think of himself as God’s errand boy) and the Knights of Columbus, where he was awarded the Des Moines Diocese Grand Knight of the Year, 1993. He was an active member of his parish since 1955.

Jim was the classic “nice guy” who enjoyed the company of many. Some of his favorite things to do were playing tennis, watching lots of sports, game nights with his family and monthly ‘pitch’ with his banker buddies. He also loved time spent at the family cabin in Minnesota. It became a yearly ritual to open it up and close it down each season.

Jim is survived by his wife, Teresa; children, Russ (Kathy), Jan (Steve) Tuil and Jill (Scott) Korn; grandchildren, Scott (Jessica), Michael, Jimmy (Amy), Erin Tuil and George Korn; great-grandchildren, Lily and James; and siblings, Robert (Peggy) and Virginia Stoermer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 1030 A.M., Monday, April 11, 2016 at All Saints Catholic Church. A visitation will be held 5-7 P.M., Sunday, April 10 at All Saints followed by a prayer service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to All Saints Catholic Church, Mercy Hospice and/or to the family for later designated charity.
