The Life of JOYCE MARY LISTER MCCARTY

Joyce Mary McCarty, age 84, of Knoxville, died on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Joyce was born on December 19, 1931 in Hamburg, Iowa to Julia May (Green) and Raymond Lister. Joyce is the youngest of four children; two sisters, Evelyn and Margaret, and one brother; Loyal. Joyce graduated from Centerville High School, Class of 1949.

On November 9, 1951 in Centerville, Iowa, Joyce and R. DeWayne McCarty were united in marriage. Joyce and DeWayne shared 57 years of marriage and were blessed with two children; David and Pam. DeWayne died on December 15, 2008.

Joyce began working, as a secretary, at the Knoxville VA Hospital in January of 1951. She worked with many departments and for several years with the engineering department. Joyce retired in 1990.

After retiring, Joyce and DeWayne took lots of vacations including; Europe, Germany, Alaska, and they also wintered in Texas.

Joyce and DeWayne both worked as ushers at the Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines for many years. They enjoyed the state wrestling and basketball tournaments and they saw many concerts including: Metallica, Ozzy Osborn, Nirvana, Paul McCartney and an abundance of Disney on Ice performances. A big highlight of Joyce’s life was being able to see Elvis Presley in concert. Joyce loved her family and had a special place in her heart for her grandkids and her great grandsons. Joyce enjoyed many hobbies during her life including: needle work, quilting, painting and ceramics.

Joyce is survived by her children, David McCarty, Pam (Clyde) Prichard both of Knoxville; two grandchildren, Sonny (Abby) Prichard of Knoxville and Shanna (Dan) Bravener of Waterloo; and three great-grandchildren, Karder and Liam Bravener, Beau Prichard and baby Prichard due in October. Joyce is also survived by her sister, Margaret Harder of Virginia; sister-in-law, Mary Clark of Vancouver, WA; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Loyal; one sister, Evelyn; and her husband DeWayne McCarty.

Visitation for Joyce will be held from 9:30 A.M. until 11:00 A.M., on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Winfield Funeral Home in Knoxville.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 A.M., at the Winfield Funeral Home, with Pastor Brent Hanna officiating. Burial will be held at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Radio Ministry.
