The Life of James Tolbert

ACCIDENTLY SHOT.

Monday afternoon, about one o'clock, James Tolbert, colored, aged fifteen, was accidentally shot by his brother, "Buddie." The boys were planning a game of foot ball with the D. and D. institution boys, but expected to take a hunt first. Buddie was sitting in a chair in the sitting room and James, his unfortunate brother, was standing in the dining room with the open door between. From some unknown cause the gun was discharged, the load entering the breast, of his brother, passing through the, body entering near the heart. The wounded boy lived until five o'clock, but never regained consciousness.

The boy in whose hands the gun was held swore that he was trying to push the load further in, the gun was rusty and he made extra effort to move the load when the gun was discharged accidentally.

The family live in the north west part of town, corner of Mulberry and Pine, where the distressing accident occurred. A coroner's' jury was impannelled Tuesday morning consisting of the following gentlemen and under direction of Cononer Wiliamson made a thorough investigation of the affair: Clem Swank, foreman; J. S. M. Hunter, W. T. Beamis, T. W. Noland, C. H. Ewing and J. C. Nail.

The verdict of the jury was that James Tolbert met his death by accidental shooting by his brother, Buddie Tolbert.
