The Life of Catharine Marie Pitts

Daughter and Mother Die Within Ten Days of Each Other

The death of Mrs. Katherine Pitts Tuesday evening, September 1, occurred just 10 days later than that of her daughter, Mrs. Ed Franz, of Kansas City, Mo., of whose death she had never been told owing to her own serious condition.

Katherine Lipp was born in Pennsylvania November 27, 1838, and with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Lipp, moved to Degraft, Ohio. At this place she was married to J.W. Pitts, and in the fall of 1869 came to Kansas City, and from there, to Olathe in 1871.

Mr. Pitts was an engineer and for 16 years was employed at the Ott Mill, where he operated an old stone byurr grist, the farmers bringing their corn and wheat for miles around to be ground at the old mill. For four years he was engineer at the Olathe waterworks, and it was while living there, on April 29, 1893, that he died.

After his death Mrs. Pitts moved to the home on East Loula street, and for 39 years lived in the same house.

She was reared in the faith of the Dunkard religion, and during her entire lifetime, clung to the belief of her forefathers.

Four months ago she was compelled to take her bed, owing to her loss of strength, but after two weeks, was able to be up part of the time during the daytime, and take a little exercise walking around her yard. She was confined to her bed only two days before he death..

The funeral service was held from the home Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by Rev. J.A. Renwick, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, and burial was in the Olathe cemetery.

Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. Joh Marshall of Kansas City, and Mrs. Charles Crawford of Olathe. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Lee Crutcher, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Mary Johnson of Marion, Ohio, and one brother, Jacob Lipp, of Jamestown, New York. Two sons and five daughters preceded her in death.
