The Life of Gertrude Noteman

Gertrude Noteman Was Daughter of Pioneer Probate Judge of 1866

Early day resident of Olathe, Born in 1863, Services Held August 8

Miss Gertrude Noteman died Saturday night in an ambulance on the way to the Kansas City hospital. She had taken suddenly ill at her Owen sister’s hotel here a few hours earlier

News of the death brought regret and memories of early day Olathe to many.

Miss Gertie, as she was affectionately known by the whole community. She was 81 years old, the daughter of Judge B.J. Noteman, who was elected probate judge of Johnson County in 1866asnd served several years. Prior to that he served as Justice of the Peace from 1861 to 1866.The records in the Probate Court files were written by him in pen and ink, and is the finest specimen of handwriting.

She was born Feb. 9, 1863, and lived her entire life in Olathe, attending the school of the town for her education. She joined the Olathe Congregational church in 1884, and had been a constant attendant as long as her health permitted. Her age was 81 years, 6 months and 27 days, and she was probably one of the oldest members of that church in point of membership.

The Noteman family moved to Johnson County in 1863, coming from New York state. There were just eleven houses here, and they were living in Olathe when the Quantrill raids took place. Miss Gertrude is the last of that pioneer family

She is the last of that generation of the Noteman family that knew, from the living in Kansas in the early days of her history, what the price of the now pleasant and prosperous community of Olathe, was paid by the early settlers of this part of the state.

She had been a registered member of the Old settlers association since its first organization. She was a much loved and rather unique character. She formed many close personal friendships among those of her own generation and carried it down to the children and grandchildren of her favorite families. Her charming personality endeared her each person whom she met, all of whom will miss her.

Funeral services were held in the Julien Chapel Tuesday afternoon, Aug 8, at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Hoover Rupert of the Methodist church. Interment in the Noteman lot in the Olathe cemetery.

She leaves a niece, Mrs. Flacy Munck, 1362 Hamilton Street, Washington, D.C., a grandniece, Mrs. Gordon Williams, 5922 Hansen, Merriam, Kans., and her cousin, Miss Isa DePledge, 315 Seneca Street, Oneida, N.Y.
