DEATH OF CICERO WINTERMUTE

Cicero Wintermute was born in Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pa., on October 15, 1842. He died at his home in Olathe, Kansas, April 22, 1915, aged 72 years, 6 months and 8 days. He enlisted in the fall of 1861 as private in Company H, 2nd Regiment of Pennsylvania Artillery for three years. His company formed part of the garrison of Fort Delaware during the winter of 1861 and 1862. In the spring of ’62 his regiment was assigned to duty in the army of the Potomac. His regiment lost 616 men, killed and wounded. He was successfully promoted to corporal and sergeant and became a well drilled soldier and expert gunner. He was mustered out of service on the 28th day of December, 1864, at Varina, Va.

He came to Johnson County in the summer of ’66 and engaged in farming near Olathe. He was married to Missouri A. Hayes on March 20, 1868. To this union four children were born, Frank, Mary Etta, Walter and Myrtle. In the spring of 1873 on account of the ill health of his wife, the family made a trip by wagon to Colorado. The U.P. Railway being completed, they returned by rail. He was a firm believer in the teachings of Christ, especially when he said, “Whatsoever ye would that other should do unto you, do ye even so unto them.”

Cicero Wintermute was a Sir Knight Templar; Past Master of Olathe Lodge No. 19, A. F. & A. M. and Past High Priest of Olathe Chapter No. 10, R.A. M.
