The Life of Joseph Stuart

JOSEPH STUART.

One by one the old settlers are passing to their reward leaving behind them loved ones who mourn their departure. The last to leave us was Uncle Joe Stuart, residing on West Park street, who died suddenly about 9 o'clock Thursday May 31. His death was entirely unexpected and came as a great shock to his wife and children and to the hosts of friends in the community and the county.

Mr. Stuart was out to the Memorial exercises on Wednesday and was in his usual health apparently when Mrs. Stuart left home Thursday morning to go to her store. He was cutting the grass in their yard that morning so the neighbors say and as was his usual custom, it is supposed, he had laid down on the lounge to take a nap. At any rate, when Mrs. Joseph Smith, who lives next door and who usually looks after matters around the Stuart home in Mrs. Stuart's absence, went into the house about 11 o'clock, she found him cold in death. Dr. Mills was summoned and on examination said that he had been dead for about two hours.

The wife, Mrs. M. J. Stuart, the milliner, two daughters, Mrs. Minnie Nichols, of Hobart, Okla., Mrs. Josie Nichols, of Kiowa, Kans. , and one son, Frank, of Cripple Creek, Colo., survive. Mr. Stuart, came to Jonnson county in 1858, and for a time resided on a farm near Gardner, but about thirty-four years ago moved to Olathe where he resided until his death.

The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence and was in charge of Rev. Luther Moore, pastor of Christian church.
