The Life of Jesse Thomas Nichols

J.T. NICHOLS. PASSES AWAY

A Citizen Long Prominent In Olathe Business And Public Circles

After eating his dinner Sunday, February 13, Mr. Jesse T. Nichols, on North Cherry, walked into the living room, complained of a pain in the chest and before physicians could arrive, he died. Death .was due to the hardening of the arteries. He was ready to attend services at the First . Presbyterian church that morning intending to go with a neighbor in his car. For some reason the neighbor did not stop. He had intended to visit his son in Kansas City, going on an afternoon Strang car.

Of old Quaker stock, Mr. Nichols came from Ohio, and settled on a farm, 8 miles northwest of Olathe, 46 years ago. Later he moved to Olathe and was for 25 years treasurer of the Johnson County Co-Operative Association, which showed the remarkable faith the eight or nine hundred stockholders of the store had in his integrity.

From 1908 to 1912 he was county treasurer. For a term of one year he was president of the Johnson County Co-Operative Association. With a partner, F. V. Ostrander, he established the Olathe Packing Co., 24 years ago and was connected with it until five years ago. It was this concern which manufactured the famous Olathe Farm Sausage used far and near.

Mr. Nichols, in company with his wife, son and his family left New York in July, 1914, to sail for Europe, for three months. When part way over, news of the war was received by wireless and they came back.

Mr. Nichols was 69 years of age and a civil war veteran. He is one of the youngest members of Franklin Post No. 68. He is survived by a wife, the daughter of Mrs. Fannie Jackson, an army nurse in the Civil War, a son, J. C. Nichols, and a daughter, Mrs. W. A. Mitchell of Kansas City.

Mr. Nichols was a member of a large family of whom he was the last but one, a sister, Mrs. Susan Meade, of Tacoma Park, Washington, surviving him. The funeral services were conducted from the residence at two o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. S. F. Riepma officiating, and burial made in the Olathe cemetery.
