The Life of Mary N Marquis

OLATHEAN DROWNS HERSELF IN WELL

MISS MAYME MARQUIS ENDS HER LONG SIEGE OF SICKNESS

Leaves Her Room at Midnight Wednesday Night and Is Found a Few Minutes Later in the Well-- Doubtless Unconscious

On Thursday morning the people of this city were shocked to learn that Miss Mayme Marquis had committed suicide soon after midnight on Thursday morning by drowning in a well. Miss Marquis has been in poor health for several years and only recently  recovered from a severe illness, which left her weakened in body and mind. There is no question but that her mind was unbalanced at the time of her death, for she could have had no reason for the act . Her home life and surroundings were pleasant, and she was naturally of a cheerful temperament. On the death of an uncle some time ago she inherited a fortune, so that she had nothing to worry her in any way.

Miss Marquis got up at about midnight and in answer to a question from her sister, said that she was going to the bath room. Her sister Anna was sleeping with her. Mrs. Monfort was staying with the sisters and occupied a separate room. Miss Anna waited a short time for her return then went in search of her. After looking through the house she went outside and soon discovered that a trap door in the platform covering of the well was open and at once sought aid. Mr. Whitford, who resides north of the Marquis home, was aroused and he in turn called Mr. Keepers who lives just across the street. Mr. Keepers brought a rope and lantern and lowering the lantern into the well discovered the body, with the head and shoulders above the water. The body was wedged between the pump stem and the wall. Other neighbors came and the body was removed from the well, but she was dead when taken out. Physicians were called and every effort made to restore her to consciousness, but they announced at once that she was dead.

Miss Marquis was respected by all who knew her and had a host of friends. She leaves a sister and brother, Miss Anna Marquis of this city and Mr. Edward Marquis of Leavenworth. The Marquis family was one of the best known in the county, having settled in Johnson county many years ago. For many years the family had been prominent in this city and county. The funeral was held at the residence on South Chestnut street at 2:30 p. m. on Saturday, May 17th and the body laid to rest in the Olathe cemetery.
