The Life of Effie Mahaffie

MRS. EFFIE CAIUTHERS.

Mrs. Effie Mahaffie Carithers was born December 10, 1848 and died October 27, 1909, at her late home, in Oklahoma, City, Oklahoma. Deceased was a daughter of the late J. B. and Lucinda Mahaffie and emigrated with her parents from Indiana to Olathe at the age of eight years where she grew to womanhood.

Deceased was married to Sam Carithers in 1872 and in 1874 emigrated to Colorado, where the family lived for a number of years, when they returned to Olathe, where they resided until they removed to Oklahoma City where they have since made their home. The husband died in 1902.

In addition to a host of friends and other relatives, Mrs. Carithers leaves three children to mourn her death, Mrs. Grace Allen, Miss Ella and Frank Carithers, all of Oklahoma City.

Mrs. Carithers was in the enjoyment of apparent good health and Thursday of last week, she was attending a meeting of a ladies organization of the First Congregational church of Oklahoma City, of which she was a prominent member and on leaving the churcn, suffered a nervous collapse. She was revived and taken to her home, where she was again attacked with a similar illness, but medical aid soon restored her to consciousness and she appeared to be on the way to complete recovery, when Wednesday, October 27,  she again suffered a relapse & rom which she never rallied, dying at nine o''clock a. m. of that day.

The body was brought to Olathe for interment, arriving Saturday morning, and the funeral was from the home of her brother, W. A. Mahaffie, Saturday afternoon. As funeral services had been held at Oklahoma City, conducted by her pastor of the Ccngregational church there, the exercises here consisted only of prayer at the house and at the grave, by Rev. Mr. Buchanan, of the First Presbyterian church.

Mrs. Carithers was an amiable, devout Christian woman and enjoyed the love and esteem of all who knew her. She was very popular here, having spent her childhood and youth in this community and was well known.

The funeral was attended by a large number of her friends and associates of former days, who lovingly knew her as Effie Mahaffie, the talented and lovable girl faithful devoted wife and kind mother. She was ever faithful to her church, serving it with commendable loyalty, her last act of service being given to that organization which she so much. Loved.
