Mrs. Fannie Oslin Jackson – 1835-1925

“Fannie Oslin was born at Snapping Shoals, Ga, July  12, 1835. Was married to Z.N. Jackson December 24, 1850. Passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.T. Nichols, February 19, 1925.” “These are facts that tell the simple story of a life. But to the many who knew and loved her and who read between the lines, it tells a story of rare beauty and wonderful service... A life that had is beginning in the sunny Southland 25 years before the Civil War and its reign of terror. A life full of joy and love, and a romance that brought her marriage to her childhood sweetheart. A home was built and children came to make life happy, then the war cast its dark shadows…”

“ Although born amidst slavery, and always remaining true lovers of the South, both Mr. and Mrs. Jackson were opposed to slavery and to secession. When it became apparent that all able bodied men of that section must answer the call of the South, the young husband enlisted in the 8th Georgia volunteers and the brave little wife, with a heavy heart, took up the burdens of the family and the farm alone.

 

The little home was in the direct path of Sherman’s ,arch to the Sea and for days the sound of cannon was terrifying, then the battle of Snake Creek Gap was fought and dozens of soldiers were killed or wounded in the yard almost. One night the circumstances of her living was transformed and her hospital services as a nurse began by making an emergency hospital out of her home. Shew was so untiring in her efforts and so [proficient in her work that she was given a recommendations by the General in charge of the Union Army at that place, a document that she cherished until her death. It resulted in her becoming a regularly appointed nurse.

 

Her home being practically in ruins, she was taken on a perilous journey over battle fields to a field hospital at the Front where until the close of the war she gave the best of her service to the hard task of nursing Union Soldiers under the adverse conditions of those days…
