Mrs. S. P. Holcomb.
Susan Phenicie Holcomb was born March 18, 1832, in Hagerstown, Maryland. Sometime during 1832 her parents moved to Sandusky, Ohio, and from thence in 1836 to Steuben county, Indiana, where Mrs. Holcomb grew up to womanhood and received her education.
She graduated from the high school of Angola and then attended a private seminary for young ladies in Orland, Indiana, for several years, and then studied three years in Hillsdale College, Michigan.
On March 1, 1859, she was married to Myron C. Holcomb.  In a few days after the wedding the young couple moved to Sycamore, Illinois Like many others they became attracted to the young territory of Kansas and her struggles for freedom from the slave power and the opportunties offered for a home. After investigating the matter and some delay residing a year in Galesburg, Illinois, during the period of preparation and waiting in 1862 they came to Kansas and located on the claim which si now a fine farm.
In 1866 they left the farm and came to Olathe and built them a small house on the site of their present commodious home, where Mrs. Holcomb died February 14, 1898; aged sixty-five years ten months and twenty-six days.
Mrs. Holcomb was a woman of more than ordinary mental ability, strength of character and courage. That the last is true was witnessed by her coming to this state at a time when the courage of strong men was tried as well as her conduct during her own personal-experience of the dangers of those days. The character of books she read, her knowledge and understanding of the questions of the day, attest her strength of mind.
She was converted and joined the Baptist church in 1851, with which she was connected until December 28, 1887, when she united with the Congregational church of Olathe. She was a faithful christian woman who loved  her church and  was faithful to its services, she died in the full assurance of faith in Christ and a home in Heaven. Her last days were days of peace and bright anticipations.
Mrs. Holcomb was one of six children of whom two sisters, Mrs. M. G. Miller and Mrs. A. E. Farnbam, and a brother, survive. During the time of sickness and the days following it was manifest that Mrs. Holcomb had the respect of the entire community and held a warm place in the hearts of a wide circle of friends who did what they could during her last days to show their love, and after her death by two offerings of beautiful flowers, the rendering of such assistance as they were able and expressions sympathy to the mitigate  the sorrow of the husband and sisters. She was laid away in her last earthly home upon a bright beautiful day indicative of the brighter world beyond where the sun always shines and the day is always bright.
