The Life of Robert Lee Hickam

Robert Lee (Bob) Hickam passed away September 20th at Olathe Medical Center surrounded by his friends and family. Bob was born April 20th, 1928 in Kansas City, Mo. He spent his formative years in Independence, Mo. Graduating from William Chrisman High School in 1946, lettering in football and track. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was discharged in March 1948. He entered KCMO Junior College and received an Associate Degree in 1950. He enlisted in the U.S. Air force Reserve and was recalled to active duty while attending the University of Minnesota. He was discharged in 1952 as a 1st Sergeant and Weather forecaster.· Following this tour of duty, Bob attended Rockhurst College, receiving his degree of BSBA. Bob and his family moved to Olathe in 1967 where he was employed at RO Corporation. He was active in Boy Scouts and youth baseball and basketball, and served as president of Little League East from 1970 to 1972. Those same years, he was Director of Olathe Area Chamber of Commerce. He was also active in the Olathe Sertoma Club. Bob retired at Knit-Rite Inc. as Sr. Vice President. He is survived by his Wife of 57 years, JoAnn, and two sons, Robert and wife Terri, of KC. Mo, Scott and wife Christine, McKinney, TX. daughter, Rebecca Iveson, Olathe and six grandchildren. Bob was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 153. 

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. at Penwell­Gabel Funeral Home, 14275 S. Blackbob Rd., Olathe, KS, where the family will receive friends an hour prior to service. Interment, Olathe Memorial Cemetery.
