The Life of Elizabeth L Hancock

IN REMEMBRANCE.

"The long rough road is ended.
Her weary feet have pressed;
How rough to her weak footsteps
Perhaps we never guessed.
But with the weary journey
She'll be no more distressed.
The face we bend and softly kiss
Bears no impress but that of bliss."

Elizabeth Corbin was born near Yates City, Knox county, Ill., July 9, 1846, where she resided until her marriage January 2, 1868, to T. N. Hancock of Johnson county, Kas., who immediately brought his bride to the home he had prepared for her 1I mile west of Stanley, and where they continued to reside until about eight years ago, when they moved to Olathe. Eight months ago, Mr. Hancock died, after a brief illness, and she never recovered from the shock. About four months ago she had a stroke of paralysis and has since been bedfast. All that medical skill, experienced nurses and loving care could do, was done to alleviate her suffering and restore her to health, but the Master called her to join the loved ones bhe had so often spoken of as gone oetore, and sne passed peace fully to rest at 12 o'clock, September 1, 1K)4. She realized some time since, that her life work was almost o'er, but with a calm resignation, and Christian fortitude she talked with her family and friends of the parting, expressed faith in God and said on one occasion to one of her dear ones, "Trust Jesus just as far as you can and he'll always be with you."

A few weeks prior to her marriage she united with the M. E. church, continuing in that faith for a number of years. There being no church of that denomination near her Kansas home she united with the Presbyterian church of which she remained a faithful member until her death. Although suffering extremely at times she never murmured; she never said the day was long or the night dreary. Her only thought being one of solicitude for those around her bedside.

Mrs. Hancock was a teacher in the public schools of Illinois in her girlhood days. A refined true woman in every sense or the word, with lofty thoughts and aspirations. "Gifted with a kind heart and a sweet disposition, she scattered sunshine wherever she went."

She was noted as being a friend of girls and to her more than one mother had cause to be thankful. She was of more than ordinary intelligence and interested in any cause that tended to uplift humanity. She was a charter member of Stanley Grange and one of its first officers. After moving to Olathe she was, while health permitted, an active member of the Progress club. She was alo a member of the Missionary society. Her presence will be sadly missed in all circles in which she moved.

Funeral services were conducted in the Presbyterian church of Olathe by Rev. Henderson, pastor of M. E. church. Text found in II Peter, 1st chapter and 11th verse, "And so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." The interment was in the Olathe cemetery. The floral tributes were prefuse and beautiful, the offerings of relatives, friends and societies. The music was sweet and comforting.

She leaves to mourn her loss, a married daughter, Mrs. Dr. Johnson with her husband, two single daughters, Inez and Pearl, one son Lyman; with his wife, and' two children all of whom reside in Olathe and present during her last illness, also one who has been a daughter in the home for a number of years, Miss Ella Ogden of St Louis, was with her the last two months, and her aged mother and half sister in Illinois and two half sisters in Olathe, Mrs. Hancock was the last child in a family of four children the mother has outlived them all.

No words of ours can alleviate their sorrow, we can only commend them to Him who hath said "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying; neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." - A.E. M.
