Ruth Elizabeth Hughes, 95, of Olathe, KS., passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday, November 14, 2011 at Olathe Medical Center. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 17, 2011 at the McGilley & Frye Funeral Home. Burial in Olathe Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: Olathe Food Pantry c\o Olathe First Presbyterian Church 621 S. Lee Ave. Olathe, KS. 66061. Ruth was born on September 6, 1916 in Olathe, KS., to Aaron Robert and Alice May (Warner) Allison. In 1929 she joined the First Presbyterian Church and was an active member. Ruth attended Kansas State University, then transferred to Pittsburgh Teachers College, after which she taught in Johnson County Schools for 13 years. On July 29, 1946 she married the love of her life, Phillip Hughes. To this union were born three children, Alice, Aaron, and Beth. After they were all in school, for six years she became the Activities Director for a Johnson County nursing home. She also served as Activities Director for Good Samaritan Nursing Home for 10 years. Ruth loved people and working with various groups. Ruth managed the Johnson County Food Pantry, and as an avid volunteer member of Olathe Medical Center, where she worked in the gift shop for eight years before retiring. Ruth and her husband Phil were foster parents to two children, Cathy and Phil. Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, husband of 43 years Phillip Hughes, brother Francis Allison and sister Lois Houghland. Survivors include her three children: Alice Smotherman and her husband David of Lenexa, KS., Aaron Hughes and his wife Nancy of Ozark, MO., and Beth Weber of Olathe, KS. Left behind to cherish her memory are her five grandchildren. She is also survived by ten great grandchildren, two sisters, and a host nieces, nephews and cousins.
