The Life of Margaret Jane Hammond

Death of Mrs. M.J. Hammond

The death of one of the oldest and most highly esteemed women of Olathe occurred at her home, 234 North Kansas Avenue, Saturday, March 28; at 4:10 o’clock a.m. Mrs. Hammond was 80 years, 6 months and 12 days of age. Funeral service was held at the residence at 4 o’clock Sunday, Rev.  Zook officiating and the body interred here.

Mrs. Hammond was born on Hinman Prairie Pike, Pike County, Illinois, September  16, 1833. She was next to the youngest of nine children. In 1851 she was married to Lucius Foote, and to this union two children were born, Lucius Foote, who died in infancy, and Mrs. Clara Smith of Los Angeles, California.

On October 24, she was married to J.A. Hammond and in ’59 they came overland and settled on the farm, north of Olathe, where the Grand View school house now stands. 33 years ago the family moved to Olathe and Mr. Hammond died December 20th, 1905. Sons surviving are Charles E., Edward C., and Arthur S., all of Olathe.

Mrs. Hammond was a faithful and devoted member of the Methodist church, which she joined at a very early age and took great pleasure in her church affiliation and work for the Master. She possessed a splendid memory and an exceedingly bright mind, retaining her faculties to the end. Her life was filled with good deeds and she will be greatly misses as the true and faithful always are.
