Obituary of James Kirkpatrick

James Kirkpatrick was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, August 11, 1847 and died at the family home in Olathe, Kansas, December 14, 1927, aged eighty years, four months and three days.

He was united in marriage with Alice Lindsey April 27, 1873. Eight children came to bless this union. besides his widow, Mrs. Alice Kirkpatrick, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. S.H. Arnold, of Kansas City, Kansas, and five sons and eleven grandsons. The sons are: Walter, of Olathe, Gene, Earnest, Linn and Bert, all of Kansas City, Kansas. The sixth son died over seas in the World War and a daughter, Lulu, died December 15, 1908.

He had been taught the art of brick laying by his father in Virginia, son on coming to Kansas he established the only brick kiln ever operated in Johnson county, which he kept in operation until about eighteen years ago. He has built or helped practically all the brick buildings that have been erected in Olathe in the past sixty years.

His policy stood for plainness, honestly , and uprightness. Though afflicted for thirteen years, he patiently endured his affliction to the end.

He was a kind father and husband, honorble, in all his dealings and a good friend and neighbor. His body bearers were his five grandsons and a great nephew.

James Kirkpatrick is no more. In his passing a familiar figure is removed from Johnson county and Olathe. His funeral was held from the Methodist church, Thursday at two-thirty p.m. in the presence of a large number of his old friends. The service was conducted by George W. Braden, Pastor of the Methodist church.
