The Life of John J Glover

MAYOR JOHN J. GLOVER DEAD.

Dies of Apoplexy at His Home Tuesday Evening.

A general surprise swept over the city of Olathe about 8:30 o'clock Tuesday evening, when it was announced that Mayor John J. Glover had died suddenly at his home, 232 South Water street, in this city. For several weeks past Mr. Glover has not been in good health, though no immediate danger was thought to exist by his family or his nearest friends. He had been out to the barn, and on entering the house took up a magazine and was sitting in a rocker in the dining room. His six-year-old son, Ellis, was sitting on the arm of the chair, and his daughter, Helen, 15 years old, was also sitting in the room. They were the only ones in the house at the time. Shortly after he sat down, about 8 o'clock, he began breathing heavily and snoring. The daughter supposed he was playing with her brother, as he often did, and thought nothing of it at first, but the snoring became so violent that she thought something unusual was the matter and called to her father, and noticing that he had turned very pale and receiving no answer from him, she became frightened and ran to the home of I. H. Legate. Mrs. Legate summoned her husband and the members of the family who were not at home, but before any of them reached the house Mr. Glover had breathed his last. The physican says his death was due to a stroke of apoplexy.

Mayor Glover has for some time had kidney trouble. About a week ago he had a sinking spell out in the barn while doing his evening chores, but recovered in a little while and did not say anything to his wife about it. He did inform his son. Robert, about it some time after, and went to a physician for medical aid. He complained at that time of severe pains in his chest. The only complaint, however, made before his death was that he was very tired. He had spent most of the day working about his house at the corner of Santa Fe and Water streets. Mrs. Glover had gone to attend a meeting of the Eastern Star lodge. Miss Helen says she thinks her father died in less than five minutes after the first symptoms were noticed.

The funeral services will be held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the home, 232 Water street, conducted by the Rev. W. M. Elledge.

Major Glover was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, June 2S, 1851. At the time of his death he was 57 years old. He moved from Pennsylvania to Arkansas and from that state to Kansas, about twenty-five years ago. For eight years he was engaged in the livery and transfer business in this city. Was for four years sheriff of Johnson county and at the time of his death, was serving his second year as mayor of the city of Olathe. The deceased leaves a widow, three daughters and four sons.
