CHARLES HENRY EWING

Charles Henry Ewing was born November 3rd, 1836 in the city of New York and died at Olathe Friday morning, July 16th, 1915 at the age of seventy-nine years. When six months old his parents removed from New York to Sparta, Ills.

At the age of 20 he professed his faith in Christ by uniting with the "New-Light" Conenanter church. On November 3rd, 1859 he was united in marriage with Miss Jean Bicket and both placed their church membership in the United Presbyterian church. On April 1st, 1865 Mr. and Mrs. Ewing with 21 other families from the neighborhood of Sparta arrived in Olathe which has since been their home.

On November 10th, 1866 the United Presbyterian church was organized in Olathe. Mr. Ewing was elected and ordained to the eldership of the newly organized church, which office he held until his death. Thus the widowed wife of the deceased is the only charter member of the congregation left with us.

Ten children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Ewing, seven of whom remain to mourn their father's death. They are: Mrs. Mary E. Edgar, Sterling, Kan.; T. S. Ewing, Colorado Springs.Colo.; W. A. and H. E. Ewing, Conway Springs, Kans.; Miss Minnie A. Ewing, Kansas City, Kans.; Mrs. Lydia J. Fulton, Olathe, Kans., and Frank E. Ewing, Portland, Oregon; all of whom were present at the bed side of their father at his death except T. S. and Frank. The funeral services were conducted from the United Presbyterian church Saturday at three o'clock, Rev. J. A. Montieth officiating, and burial was made in the Olathe cemetery.
