William John Slater Cook

Was born in Beaver Falls, PA, March 28, 1844 and died March18, 1926.In 1853, his family moved to Iowa before moving to Johnson County in 1857, when Mr. Cook was 13 years old. The family settled on a farm six miles east of Olathe where they lived until 1919, when they moved to their present home in Olathe due to failing health.

“The story of Mr. Cook’s life is one that can never be fully told. It will be understood only by those who have passed through some of the hardships he passed through. He knew the hardships of pioneer life in the new country. He passed through the trying times in this locale before the Civil War. In 1861 at the age of 16, Mr. Cook, with the consent of his parents, was able to join the Union forces and became a member of the Sixth Kansas Volunteer Calvary.  As a member of this troop. He took part in the battle of Westport and also the battle of Massard Prairie. In the latter battle they were completely surrounded by the enemy but a few managed to cut their way through the lines to safety. Mr. Cook was not content to save himself alone but carried another comrade. Through with him saving his life. He was honorably discharged at the end of the war.”

In 1879 he married Miss Martha Thompson and to this union was born three daughters, the two youngest, Mary, Etta and Maggie Blanch, dying in infancy.

He was a member of the reformed Presbyterian Church of Olathe. “He was patient in suffering, considerate of those about him and ever hopeful and optimistic. Even in his last days when the shadow of death was lurking near he was wont to say with his weak smile “I think I am getting better.” The great Physician has touched him now and has made him whole”
