The Life of Gilson Cook

DEATH OF GILSON COOK

Mr. Gilson Cook, who had lived about a half mile north of Olathe for several years, passed away early in the morning of Friday, April 3rd., after a long and lingering illness. He was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, in the month of August 1820

After living in different parts of Ohio he and his family moved to Louisa county, Iowa, and in the year of 1895 they came to the place near Olathe where is wife and daughter still reside.

He was a faithful member of the Reformed Presbyterian church. The characteristic feature of his Christian life was the manifestation of a meek and quiet spirit. He bore his last illness with patience and fortitude till the Master said “It is enough,” and then he slept in Jesus.

He leaves behind him his aged wife with whom he had shared the joys and sorrows of sixty-four long years. Four years ago with a number of friends they celebrated their sixtieth anniversary of their marriage, a privilege enjoyed by comparatively few.

The remains of the deceased were laid away in the Olathe cemetery on Saturday afternoon, the service being conducted at the home of the pastors of the U.P. and R.P. churches, of which the latter spoke from the words, “Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season.”

He was almost eighty-three years of age. A wife, two daughters, a son and a brother survive to mourn the death, which to the departed is a great gain. For “blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life and enter in through the gates into the city.”
