Carolyn Joan Cook, age 75, of Olathe, KS, known as "C. J." to her friends and family, died at her home Friday, March 11, 2011. Carolyn was born on August 28, 1935, in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada where she was raised. Carolyn graduated from St. Thomas Collegiate Institute in 1953 where she met Jim Cook, her high school steady and husband of 53 years. Carolyn attended nursing school at Hamilton General Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1956.

She married Jim on May 10, 1958 in London, Ontario, and they lived in Kingston, Ontario, where Jim was attending medical school. Carolyn's first son, Gregory, was born in 1959 in Kingston and her first daughter, Cheryl, in 1960. Carolyn and Jim moved to Boston, MA, in 1964 where their daughter, Dianne, was born the following year. They moved that same year to Seattle, WA, where their son, Paul, was born the following year. In 1975, the family moved to Johnson County, KS, where Carolyn lived for the rest of her life. Carolyn worked for several years as a nurse at the Community Blood Center in Kansas City and later volunteered for the Visiting Nursing Association providing hospice care. She was a devoted member of the University of Kansas Medical Center Auxiliary. She was a dedicated and talented quilter and a long-time member of the Legler Barn Quilters in Lenexa and the Kaw Valley Quilters Guild. Carolyn enjoyed reading and was a member of several book clubs. Bird watching became a favorite pass-time in later years. After moving to Kansas City, she became a devoted Jayhawk fan and rarely missed a KU basketball game. Carolyn had a warm, outgoing and engaging personality that fostered countless and enduring friendships over her lifetime.

Carolyn is survived by her husband, Jim, emeritus professor at KU Medical Center; children: Rev. Dr. Gregory (Nancy) Cook, of Fort Worth, TX; Cheryl (Scott) Cook Sperry, of Olathe, KS; Dianne (Wayne) Cook Walker, of Lenexa, KS; and Paul (Robin) Cook, of Overland Park, KS; grandchildren: Ashley, Stephanie, and Anna Cook; Zachary Sperry; Emma, Izzy, and Abby Walker; and Bailey and Jack Cook.

A service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 18, at McGilley & Frye Funeral Home. A visitation will be from 10-11 a.m., prior to the service. A private interment will follow at the Olathe Memorial Cemetery, Olathe, KS. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Turning Point Center for Hope and Healing, Shawnee Mission, KS.
