The Life of Avery Erastus Farnham

PROMINENT CITIZEN DEAD

A. E. Farnham one of Olathe's most substantial and honored citizens died at his home on Chestnut street Tuesday morning at 5:30 o'clock after a brief illness of four days. The cause of Mr. Faruham's death was perforation of the bowels. For some weeks past Mr.' Farnham had not been enjoying the best of health but at no time had his sickness caused any alarm and it was not until Monday afternoon when he was taken with convulsions that his true condition was realized.

The funeral services were held from the home at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon Rev. McNutt of the Presbyterian church conducting the services. Mr. Farnham was of a family of three children, twin sisters and himself. He was born in Freemont, Steuben county, Indiana, on August 22, 1837, and on February 21, 1860, was united in marriage to Jane Phenicie at Kinderbook, Mich. In 1863 they came to Kansas and located upon a homestead two and one-half miles north of Gardner where they lived until 1875 when they moved to Olathe.

Mr. Farnham though not a public man was ever to be found upon the side of progress. Every move that was for the betterment of Olathe or her citizens found in him ready support. The deceased was a member of no church, secret or social organization, but his life was lived upon the highest moral plane, a true example of the golden rule. Firm in his convictions, charitable, honest beyond question, faithful to his friends, in fact a true man is the highest tribute that can be paid. His faithful wife who survives him has the sincere sympathy of a host of friends who share with her her deep sorrow.
