The Life of Mary A Dow

DIED.  - Dow At Chicago, Ill.,  Wednesday. Oct. 20th. 1886, of rheumatism of the heart, Mrs. Mary A., wife of J. H. Dow, aged 39 years.

It was only a short time ago that Mrs. Dow left her home for Chicago to a tend the bedside of her husband who was lying very low in that city. She was in her usual health then but she told some of her friends on the day of her departure that she felt a premonition of some impending misfortune either to her husband or herself. The thought impressed itself most forcibly upon her mind, as she kissed her little boy farewell, that it might be the last time she would see him on earth, and it seemed to sadden her feelings, but she felt it her duty to be with her husband so she went to care for him hoping that all would soon be well.

The Saturday before her death she was seized with acute rheumatism in the right wrist. It was thought to be nothing serious at first, but the fatal disease kept working its way gradually toward the heart which it reached at 9 o'clock on Wednesday night resulting in instant death.

The sad news fell like a pall upon this community; it was so sudden and unexpected that it could not be believed until the confirmation came that it was indeed too true. Mrs. Dow was one of nature's noble women. Gifted with a kind heart and a sweet disposition she scattered sun shine and happiness wherever she went. In her the poor have lost their best friend because her charities, though quiet and unobtrusive, were unbounded. She delighted to seek out the unfortunates of God's creatures and brighten the pathway by her generosity and friendly counsel. Fortune favored her with an abundance of earthlv possessions, a pleasant home and a happy family, but she was a firm believer in the idea that the greatest happiness which can be derived from wealth is in using a just portion of it to alleviate the necessities of those in want, and for this reason, no one ever appealed to her in vain.

She was a devoted wife an affectionate mother and useful member of society, and she died a firm believer in the Christian religion and the hope of a glorious resurrection in the life to come. Her funeral, which took place from her late home in Olathe, at three o'clock last Saturday, was attended by a large circle of friends and acquaintances, Rev. A. V. Stout, pastor of the Presby terian church, officiated at the house and after a hymn sung by the choir and a few touching remarks, he read the impressive service of that denomination which was followed by the choir rendering another appropriate hymn, after which the friends viewed in sadness the familiar form now still in death. Then the procession wended its way to the cemetery where the last sad rites were rendered and the remains consigned to their long last home. The bereaved husband and now motherless children have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in their sore affliction.
