The Life of William H Cope

WM. H. COPE DEAD.

Wm. H. Cope an old soldier and resident of Johnson county since 1853, died at his home on Santa Fe avenue this city Tuesday evening, April 12, at 7. p. m. Interment in Olathe cemetery, Wednesday afternoon; Franklin Post, No. 68, G. A. R. having charge of the funeral.

Mr. Cope had been ailing for some time prior to his death and one of his old comrades usually stayed with him. Saturday night Mr. Cope told his comrade that he would be all right for the night and as he was going to retire his companion might as well go home. This was the last seen or Mr. Cope until he was found wondering in an apparently demented and semi-nude condition in the north part of town early Sunday morning. He was taken in charge by Sheriff Hendrix and his friends notified.

The house was found to have been turned topsy-turvy, stoves, lamps, chairs, etc., turned over and presenting a scene of wanton destruction and chaos. Whether Mr. Cope in his delirium turned things upside down or whether, as it is vaguely hinted; someone else in a search for supposed hidden treasure did it, is a mystery unexplained. Mr. Cope in his semi-rational minute Sunday spoke of being assaulted and robbed by two men, and it is said that $20 which he was known to have in his possession Saturday is missing.
