The Life of Charles Lee Coulter

A memorial service will be held on Vashon Island at the Vashon Presbyterian Church for Lee Coulter on Saturday, April 12th at 1:00. A reception will follow at the Vashon Island Golf and Country Club.

Lee Coulter died peacefully on March 29, 2008 in Seattle. He was born in Olathe, Kansas on July 25, 1923. During WWII he was stationed with the Navy in the Puget Sound on a top secret project. It was here that he met his wife Maribeth. After his discharge, he graduated from Northwestern University Law School in Evanston, IL in 1949. He returned to Seattle to work for the Hartford Ins., Co. He later was the attorney for the Assoc. of Washington Ind. in Olympia. It was there that he wrote the AWI digests during the legislative sessions. It was a document legislators used almost exclusively. He also had a private law practice in Seattle during that time.

He resigned as AWI's general counsel in 1967 to become vice president and general counsel for the General Telephone Co. of the Northwest and Alaska, now Verizon. After retiring, he became the country lawyer on Vashon Island. He even served as a district court judge. He was a member of the Washington State Bar for over 50 years. Law was his passion. He always said "if you enjoy what you are doing, life is easy".

In his last 2 years, he's been lovingly taken care of by his caregiver, Dee Weedin.

Lee is survived by his three children; Beth VandenBrink, Kay Coulter and Warren Coulter. He has three grandchildren; Kevin VandenBrink, A.J. Pisano and Mary Pisano, and three great grandchildren; Katie, Ryan, and Zachary VandenBrink. Two of his grandchildren preceded him in death; Brent and Jill VandenBrink. Lee also has one remaining brother, Glenn, who resides in Topeka, Kansas.

Contributions should be made in his memory and Brent and Jill's to:
