Obituary:
Mr. William Yates.

William Henry Yates died Saturday, April 20, at the Santa Fe hospital, Topeka. The body was brought to Olathe and the funeral service held at 2:30 Monday at Frye's Chapel, conducted by Rev. William Briggs of the First Christian church. Burial was made in the Olathe cemetery.

Mr. Yates was born at Liskard, England, November 20, 1861, coming to the United States at the age of 22 and for a time he lived in Leavenworth county. Coming here he settled on a farm near Gardner, where he stayed for 10 years when after he was united in marriage to miss Ida Reynolds, of the Black bob neighborhood, came to Olathe.

Arriving here he went to work for the Santa Fe, and was with the company for 23 years, 19 of which he served as crossing patrolman on Park street. During that length of time almost a quarter of century, he never had anything that even resembled an accident.

December 1st, 1926, he was retired from active service, on a pension. Soon after this his health began to fail, until a few days before his death, he was taken to the hospital.

Surviving are his widow, two sons, Edward and Clarence and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Katherine Watson Yates. His son, Johnny, died two years ago. One brother and two sisters also survive in England.

Almost daily for the 19 years he was crossing watchman at Park street we have seen him, and many times twice daily. Never once was Mr. Yates asked a question that he did not give a polite and courteous answer.

he is very zealous in his duties and was particularly careful of children at his crossing. We have seen him helping little ones across and also aged people whose step was slow and faltering.

In addition to his hobby of carefully watching his crossing he was quite a student of the Bible. Much of his spare time was spent in reading and re-reading favorite passages. He was able to converse intelligently on any part of the Bible. he was kindly, genial, sympathetic and a real gentleman.
