Mrs. Sarah E. Kessler

Sarah Eleanor Russell, daughter of Thomas and Nancy Jane Russell was born in Athens, Ill., April 20th., 1862 and departed this life November 28th, 1931 at the age of 69 years, 7 months and 8 days.

In the year of 1871 she came with her parents to Kansas and settled on what is known as the Black Bob, where she grew to womanhood. In 1882 she was united in marriage to Melvin Brukett. To this union was born one child, Mrs. Laura Murray of Lyons, Kans.

On March 5th, 1894, she was united in marriage to Charles William Kessler. to this union were born four children, Russell, Olathe, Kans.; Mrs. nan Perkins, Olathe, Kans.; Mrs. Edith Donham, LaCygne, Kans.; and Edison, Kansas City, Kans. She also leaves three step-children, Mrs. Roberta Ball, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. F.F. Forea, Kansas City, Mo.; and J.W. Kessler, Albany, Mo. On brother, C.C. Russell, Ocheltree, Kans.; a half brother, A.W. Russell, Canada and a half sister, Mrs. E. J. Peed, Iola Kans.; also twelve grandchildren.

In early womanhood she united with the Baptist church and has continued a faithful member until the last.

Her going leaves a vacancy which cannot be filled. Always ready and willing to help others, she was a devoted mother and a friend to all who knew her. Her recreation was among her flowers, which brought her much pleasure while here on earth.

Her husband preceded her in death, March 13, 1931, and since that time she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Perkins on South Cherry street, Olathe, Kans.

"No loving mother, true and kind,
No friend on earth like her we find,
For all of us she did her best,
God grant her eternal rest."

The funeral service was held at the Baptist church at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1st; conducted by Rev. W.H. Briggs, a former pastor of the First Baptist church, and Dr. Wood, the present pastor. Dr. Wood read the obituary, and led in prayer; and spoke of Mrs. Kessler as a mother, and as a Christian. Rev. Briggs read the Scriptures; and spoke of Mrs. Kessler as a Citizen and as a leader and companion in the family, and as Jesus' Servant, closing with the giving of Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar".

The flower girls were: Mrs. Mary Greer, Mrs. Ferner Jameson, Miss Adelia Lyons, and Miss Mabel Lyons. The Pall Bearers were Ed Francke, John Lyons, A.G. Donham, Wiley Harper, R.L. Chrisman, and Hal Robinson. The music was given by a mixed quartett composed of Mrs. Mabel Murray, Mrs. A.G. Donham, John Duke, and C.A. Swank, giving two music numbers; and a male quartett composed of M.W. Miller, L.L. Bain, John Duke, and C.A. Swank, giving one number.
