The Life of John Fletcher McKaig

John F. McKaig, one of the old settlers of Johnson county, died at his home near Bonita, Sunday, May 8, at the age of 71 years and 4 months. The funeral was held from tne home Monday and was one of the largest attended funerals held in Johnson county in re cent vears. When the cortege arrived in Olathe, Franklin Post, No. 68, G. A. R., took charge and escorted the procession to the cemetery where the body was interred and ritualistic services of that organization held. Mr. McKaig came to Johnson county in 1867. and by dent of hard work and economy had accumulated a sufficiency of this worlds goods to warrant his retiring 'from active life. The death of John McKaig removes one of the remaining makers of Kansas history.

OBITUARY.

John F. McKaig was born near Dayton, Dayton, Ohio, April 24, 1833 and died at his home near Clair, Kas., May 8, 1904, aged 7l years and 14 days.

Mr. McKaig was. one of the early settlers of Johnson county and of the state an well having come to the state in 1857 and settled upon the farm where he died. On December 25, 1861 he was united by marriage to Elizabeth Danks who survives him. Of this union 10 children were born 9 of whom are living; Mrs. Mary Patten, Mulhall, Ok., Mrs. Lida Allen, Canon City, Col., Robert H. McKaig, Miami county, Kansas, Mrs. Flora Perkins, Pueblo, Colo., J. C. McKaig, Temple, Okla., Mrs. Cora Russell, Mrs. Nellie Rice, Arthur McKaig, Luther McKaig, who live near the homestead.

 Mr. McKaig served his country in the war of the rebellion, enlisting September 23, 1862 in Co. C 10th Kansas. Latter he was transferred to Co. A and honorably discharged from the service August 15,1865. In 1871 he became a member of the M. E. church at Gardner.

The funeral services were held at the home May 9, conducted by Rev. A. H. Boyd pastor of the Gardner M. E. church and the body was laid to rest in the Olathe cemetery.
