The Life of Hannah McCanse

Mrs. Hannah MCCANSE, an old colored lady, died at Olathe Last Saturday, Jan 10, 1892, after a short illness. She had lived in Johnson County since its early settlement and was 113 years old at the time of her death. Jerry (Jeremiah) MCCANSE, of Spring Hill, is a grandson and Mrs Sublett (Betty) of Olathe, is a grand daughter. Hannah was listed as "mullato" in census records along with her daughter and grandchildren. She was a slave in Mt. Vernon, Missouri along with, at least, her daughter and grandson Jeremiah (buried in Springhill, KS and an abundant amount of literature regarding his life). Slave owner of Jeremiah was documented as William McCanse ("Uncle Bill"). Hannah had a daughter named Mary McCanse Bucy, buried in same cemetery. It is unknown whether she had other children at this time.

Hannah McCanse August 1, 1877, 1- E3 Unknown at present, Henry Bivens, 1 # E4 Buried November 28, 1875. John McCanse 1-E5 buried January 2, 1873. Mary McCanse 1-E6 buried April 19, 1880.
