Frank Ogg Saw President Lincoln

MR. OGG SAW LINCOLN. While in the Service in '61, in Front of the White House. In July, 1861, F. R. Ogg enlisted in the Civil war at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, and then went on to Washington City, and to Georgetown Heights. In October his regiment was moved one mile south of Arlington House, General Lee's residence, and General Lee left in charge an old negro and rode in the Confederate service and never returned. General Lee's mansion was fully furnished and was left in charge of the old negro servant. The general in command took possession of the residence and made it headquarters. This was Co. I, of the 19th Indiana Infantry, and later they built what was known as Fort Craig. On th3 way to cross the Potomac the brigade passed the White House and standing at the gate, there stood President Abraham Lincoln, and as the regiment passed in front of him within 30 feet of where he stood, they cheered him and in turn he saluted. Late in October, the weather turned cold, but the men had not received overcoats. Lincoln and Oliver P. Morton, governor of Indiana, came to the regiment and Mr. Morton assured the boys that they would have warm overcoats soon. Governor Morton had not been given aid by the legislature so he could not purchase the coats, but he went to New York and pledged his own credit or rather his honor tor the payment of same. So a Jew firm furnished them and later the government paid the clothiers Olathe Mirror February 7, 1924 Page 6, Col. 3 1st Addition, Block 157, Lot 3, Half W6
