The Life of Lucy Sutton Pierce

 MRS. LUCY S. PIERCE.

Lucy Sutton Haskell was born in Portland, Maine, July 18, 1828. Her people was a refined Christian family and she had the advantage of the common school academy and college. After completing her education she took up the work of teaching and taught in several states and in the city schools of Washington, D. C; twenty-six or seven years she gave to this work.

She was teaching in Washington during the sixties and was the first teacher selected by Mr. Lincoln to go among the Freedmen. In soliciting her for this work Mr. Lincoln said: "We will send a guard with you." Her reply was: "Give me two good strong women to help in the work instead of the guard."

She was married to William E. Pierce September 30, 1875, in Patterson, N. J. Together they moved to Kansas in 18- and settled on a farm one-half mile south of Ocheltree. where they lived till a few years ago, when they moved to Olathe. Since coming to Olathe both Mr. and Mrs. Pierce have been in poor health and for that reason have mingled but little with the people here and so were but little known.

Mrs. Pierce joined the Congregational church in her young girlhood and was always a devoted member and worker.

Here was a woman who gave twenty-seven of her best years to the country as a teacher; for thirty-three years she was a good and faithful wife - a home maker. During all these years she was also a faithful Sunday school teacher and worker in the church and many men and women bless her name because they owe their start in better things to her influeuce. Who can estimate the work of such a life. Had she spent all her life in one locality and died among those who knew her in her active years no church in Olathe could have held the friends who would have paid her honor.

She has gone to her reward and may her waiting husband have the blessing of her God.
