The Life of John Victor

BURNED TO DEATH.

John Victor Loses His Life While Attempting to Start A Fire With Gasoline.

About 8 o''clock Tuesday morning the one-storv frame residence of James Hoover on south Willie street with its contents was destroyed by fire.

It is not known just how the fire originated, as there was no one in the house when the fire started excepting Mr.Victor, who lost his life in the flames. His son-in-law, Mr. James Hoover and family, with whom he made his home were absent at the time. However there is a supposition that Mr. Victor in attempting to start a fire in the heating stove got hold of the gasoline instead of the coal-oil can, as about eight o''clock an explosion was heard by the neighbors and Mr. Victor was seen to fall out of the rear door, a mass of flames. Neighbors came to his assistance and cared for him but he was so badly burned that he lived only a few minutes.

Almost Immediately the house was on fire throughout, making it Impossible to save but little of its contents. The can which contained two gallons of gasoline, and which was kept on the outside of the building, was found near the stove with the top blown off. The stove doors were also found broken and torn from their hinges, which proves without doubt, that Mr, Victor was using the dangerous fluid In some manner to kindle a fire.

The fire department was soon on the scene and did good work, considering the start the flire had obtained when the alarm was turned in.

Mr. Hoover claims to have lost $25.00 in money which was In the house. He also informs us that he has $700 insurance on the house and goods.

Mr, John Victor, who lost his life in this unfortunate manner, was an old resident of Olathe, having come here In 1840. For many years he was engaged in running a transfer wagon, and was known by nearly every one in the county. He was 78 years of age.
