The Life of Thomas Ambrose Sutton

Thomas Ambrose Sutton.

In the death of Thomas Ambrose Sutton, Olathe business men have felt in an especial manner the call of the Grim Reaper. One who was in the very prime of his life, and usefulness and a participant in all the activities of his community, has been called away. Hardly had his associates realized that he was ill till they were shocked by the news of his death.

Mr. Sutton was a man of big heart and a kindly feeling. It has been said of him that nothing could induce him to speak ill of any one. He accepted his duties and responsibilities in life as a privilege and not as a burden. Coming to Olathe when only 8 years of age, with his widowed mother and four sisters, he began the struggle to make for himself a place in the community and a home for those whom he felt must look to him as their protector. That he did it nobly is attested on every side, and after all, the fidelity of a man to his home and his loved ones is the true measure of manhood.

Mr. Sutton was one of Olathe's successful business men. Almost from early boyhood, he has been associated with the business interests of the community. He began the shoe business for himself about twelve years ago and by application to his business he had built up from his small beginning to one of Olathe's best establishments at the time of his death. .

Mr. Sutton was widely known in Masonic circles. He had been one of the leading spirits in the local commandery, had risen to a thirty second degree mason and had just retired last month as Master of the local council of Select Masters.

The deceased was born in St. Catherine, Canada in 1874 and at 8 years of age came to Olathe with the family and has resided here ever since. The burial services were held Sunday afternon from the Masonic temple and was marked by a large attendance of local friends and sonic leaders in the state. The many beautiful floral tributes bespeak the high esteem in which the community held Mr. Sutton.
