The Life of Tandy Key Witcher

Death of Tandy K. Witcher A
Pioneer Johnson County Citizen.

Tandy K. Witcher died at his home in Olathe Sunday morning, January 15, 1911. aged 75 years. Cause of death, heart failure. Funeral services were held at the family residence on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Burr of the Congregational church. The G. A. R. had charge of the burial arrangements.

The death of Tandy Witcher removes from Olathe a familiar figure. If not a unique character. He was known to almost every one in Olathe. He was a pioneer citizen having come to Johnson county in the early days of her history. He was a freighter on the Old Santa Fe Trail, and was perhaps more familiar with the history of the Trail than any other person in Johnson county, if not in the state. He was rather reticent about his adventures, but when induced to talk his reminiscences were intensely interesting.

He and .his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on August "16, 1910, at which time he was presented with a gold headed cane by the Olathe G. A. R. post and at which time he related many interesting incidents of the Santa Fe overland freight line. He was an old soldier, a member of the G. A. R. He was a participant in the battle of Lone Jack. Mo., one of the hardest fought battles of the Civil War, considering the number of men engaged therein. He was a private in Company B. and chief bugler in the Eleventh Regiment of Missouri Volunteer Cavalry and was a pensioner.

He was an escort to carry mail during the war and was at one time secretary to one of the army officers.
