Obituary
Dr. Benjamin Woodward died at his in Olathe at 1 o'clock p.m., June 29th, after a severe illness or three weeks. He was born in Park House, county of Devon, England, Feb. 11th 1811.
He came to America with his parents at the age of fourteen, young enough to become thoroughly imbued with American ideas and principles, and ever after espoused her cause. Being of strong mind and of a studious nature, he was early led to choose the profession which he followed and loved until his death. By his own unaided efforts he was enabled to complete his course of study, and begin his life work.
He was married in 1832 to Amanda Hargin, of Ithaca, N. Y., to whom he held him into the service.
He was appointed by the late Dick Yates, of Illinois, Surgeon of the 22nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry, where he served until near the close of the war, when being disabled for field duty by the disease which closed his life, he was placed in charge of hospitals, where he left a record worthy of any man.
At the age of nineteen he become a professer of religion, and with him, to profess was to practice. His every day ife at home and abroad was the life of a christian, and none knew him but to love and respect him. Wrapped in the colors he so devotedly loved, laid to rest by his comrade friends and mourned by all, we leave him to his peaceful slumbers.
